While each woman (and partner) is different, there are some items that should be part of every hospital bag. Don't forget, this will not be a weekend at the spa, you will be birthing a baby. So, the odds that you will be journaling, scrap booking, doing your nails, or needing 5 different outfits is slim. However, there are a number of items that you can bring that will allow you to feel more comfortable.
What you will want (I've provided links to some of my favorite items):
-travel cosmetic bag: favorite must-have cosmetics, lotion, face wash, travel shampoo/conditioner, brush, extra hair ties, tooth brush/tooth paste
-comfy top (nursing tanks are great) and bottoms (nothing tight)
-honey sticks: these are great for a little jolt of energy during labor and are very easy to ingest
-IPod or IPhone: load it with some favorite music that you will want to hear while laboring (I do NOT recommend that you only load it with soft new-agie music...I guarantee it will get old and you will want to switch it up at some point during labor!
-IPad/magazines: If you get an epidural you will be sitting in bed for (possibly) quite some time. Might as well have something to do :)
-biggest, longest, thickest pad that you can find (you should also ask the hospital for an extra pair(s) of the sexy mesh underwear that they provide!!). Have you ever heard of "padsicles?" I recommend making a batch during the last week or so of pregnancy to have on hand after your baby is born...they are a LIFE (and bottom) SAVER!!! To make a padsicle: unwrap a pad and add witch hazel and aloe. Once this is done, wrap each one in tin foil or plastic wrap and place in freezer. Believe me, after having your little bundle of beauty, your "undercarriage" will welcome the coolness while the aloe and witch hazel encourage healing.
-breast feeding pillow
What Baby Needs:
-(2) sleeper outfits--added bonus: these from Gap have fold over cuffs that act as mittens
-going home outfit
-swaddling blanket--I love the A&A swaddles because they are light weight and very soft. I also love the larger size, which makes swaddling easier
-newborn diapers/wipes--the diapers and wipes from the Honest company are amazing! The diapers work VERY well and the wipes are just about perfect! while they are a bit more expensive than other brands, if you order the bundles they are pretty reasonably priced...The amount that you receive in the bundle actually lasts longer than a month (more like a month and a half for us). Did I mention that they are one of the most environmentally friendly diapers and they come in super cute prints?!
-pacifier (if using)
What Partner Needs:
-entertainment (book, magazine, IPAD)
-chargers for all phones, tablets, etc (for both them and mama)
-change of clothes
-change for hospital vending machines (always be prepared!)
-tooth brush, toiletries
-copies of birth plan
What item(s) did you find valuable (or not valuable at all)?? I'd love to know!!! :)
